Just Keep Planting !

PAUL ROKICH IS MY HERO. When Paul was a boy growing up in Utah, he happened to live near an old copper smelter, and the sulfur dioxide that poured out of the refinery had made a desolate wasteland out of what used to be a beautiful forest.

When a young visitor one day looked at this wasteland and saw that there was nothing living there — no animals, no trees, no grass, no bushes, no birds...nothing but fourteen thousand acres of black and barren land that even smelled bad — well, this kid looked at the land and said, “This place is crummy.” Paul knocked him down. He felt insulted. But he looked around him and something happened inside him. He made a decision: Paul Rokich vowed that some day he would bring back the life to this land.

Many years later Paul was in the area, and he went to the smelter office. He asked if they had any plans to bring the trees back. The answer was “No.” He asked if they would let him try to bring the trees back. Again, the answer was “No.” They didn’t want him on their land. He realized he needed to be more knowledgeable before anyone would listen to him, so he went to college to study botany.

At the college he met a professor who was an expert in Utah’s ecology. Unfortunately, this expert told Paul that the wasteland he wanted to bring back was beyond hope. He was told that his goal was foolish because even if he planted trees, and even if they grew, the wind would only blow the seeds forty feet per year, and that’s all you’d get because there weren’t any birds or squirrels to spread the seeds, and the seeds from those trees would need another thirty years before they started producing seeds of their own. Therefore, it would take approximately twenty thousand years to revegetate that six-square-mile piece of earth. His teachers told him it would be a waste of his life to try to do it. It just couldn’t be done.

So he tried to go on with his life. He got a job operating heavy equipment, got married, and had some kids. But his dream would not die. He kept studying up on the subject, and he kept thinking about it. And then one night he got up and took some action. He did what he could with what he had. This was an important turning point. As Samuel Johnson wrote, “It is common to overlook what is near by keeping the eye fixed on something remote. In the same manner, present opportunities are neglected and attainable good is slighted by minds busied in extensive ranges.” Paul stopped busying his mind in extensive ranges and looked at what opportunities for attainable good were right in front of him. Under the cover of darkness, he sneaked out into the wasteland with a backpack full of seedlings and started planting. For seven hours he planted seedlings. He did it again a week later.

And every week, he made his secret journey into the wasteland and planted trees and shrubs and grass. But most of it died.

For fifteen years he did this. When a whole valley of his fir seedlings burned to the ground because of a careless sheep-herder, Paul broke down and wept. Then he got up and kept planting.

Freezing winds and blistering heat, landslides and floods and fires destroyed his work time and time again. But he kept planting. One night he found a highway crew had come and taken tons of dirt for a road grade, and all the plants he had painstakingly planted in that area were gone. But he just kept planting.

Week after week, year after year he kept at it, against the opinion of the authorities, against the trespassing laws, against the devastation of road crews, against the wind and rain and heat...even against plain common sense. He just kept planting.

Slowly, very slowly, things began to take root. Then gophers appeared. Then rabbits. Then porcupines.

The old copper smelter eventually gave him permission, and later, as times were changing and there was political pressure to clean up the environment, the company actually hired Paul to do what he was already doing, and they provided him with machinery and crews to work with. Progress accelerated. Now the place is fourteen thousand acres of trees and grass and bushes, rich with elk and eagles, and Paul Rokich has received almost every environmental award Utah has.

He says, “I thought that if I got this started, when I was dead and gone people would come and see it. I never thought I’d live to see it myself!”

It took him until his hair turned white, but he managed to keep that impossible vow he made to himself as a child.

What was it you wanted to do that you thought was impossible? Paul’s story sure gives a perspective on things, doesn’t it?

The way you get something accomplished in this world is to just keep planting. Just keep working. Just keep plugging away at it one day at a time for a long time, no matter who criticizes you, no matter how long it takes, no matter how many times you fall. Get back up again. And just keep planting.

Lessons from the Last Emperor

I don’t know how many you have seen this movie – The Last Emperor , if you haven’t watched it yet , its high time you watch it .

Its an movie which will make you feel for an man whose life takes too many turns and ends up losing all that he has and finally dies. The story of the last emperor is true life incident of Henry Puyi – who was the last emperor of China. Since his father died . He had to climb the throne at the age of 3 .Due to the changes in political climate , slowly he was dethroned and his palace was abducted by the revolutionaries .At that time he was 32 . He lost everything , then he sided with the Japanese . The Japanese were using him to fight against the Chinese . Without knowing this , he supported the Japanese . In the war , China won over Japan and took all the men and women who supported the Japanese as war criminals , finally , he was in prison for 10 years and got released for his good conduct . After his term in jail , he found himself a job as a gardener and died at the age of 59 .

It is certainly a movie which will make you think.

We all think that tomorrow is permanent . we live as if we will never die . We ignore all small things in life , we end up thinking that luxury and sex are the most pleasurable things to reach . But then after looking at Henry Puyi’s life , I have made up my mind.
Tomorrow is as important as today . Today is as important as yesterday . Every day has something for us to ponder about . However , I don’t know how many of us have the courage to embrace change and be flexible enough to take life without affecting the things that matters the most to us .

I hope that I am not boring you too much with my philosophies , my idea is just to convey that , please do not think that today is enough , tomorrow is more important that today because , you may don’t mind to die as a pauper , however , it is our near and dear who is going to bear that influence of the lead man dying in poverty .Does it mean that we should win in life at ANY COST ? Definitely no , that is precisely why I have chosen the life of Henry Puyi as a topic of this article . Winning is important , however not at ANY COST.

Sometimes , life takes us to places where we never wanted to land , not even in our dreams . But many times , that is what u can expect out of life . When we try to break the laws that life wants us to abide with , life breaks us down . This does not mean that we should give in to our sorrows . it simply means that we should go with the wind . Learn to live life as a man who is going to get million opportunities to regain his/her lost legacy , however don’t let the desperation to succeed , tamper the joyful movements.

Before he died , Henry Puyi , visited the forbidden city ( His palace) as a visitor and he paid an entry fee to gain access to see his very own throne , on which he was crowned as a emperor . His secondary consort , left him when he was in his mid thirties . His wife betrayed him when he went to Japan to visit the Japanese emperor and gave birth to a child , who was actually born for his driver . He was never supported by his parents . He never got his parents love . He was raised by an servant maid , who was persuaded out of the forbidden city as a result of jealousy , because she gained so much important from the emperor. I really felt sad for him as he never got a fair chance to understand what life was , by the time he realized it , he was grey and died.

But one positive thing about Puyi ,is that he died as a courageous man , who accepted his faults and lived a honorable life of a gardener till his last breath . My job is not create sympathy for Henry Puyi , it should create an enlightenment for all of us . let us not make our children another henry puyi , for not allowing them to learn what life is . Let us not live with past glory and forget that there are new destinies to be reached. Let us not forget that where ever life takes us , it has a valuable lesson for each one of us .Last but not least , let us remember that survival makes all the difference to make a come back for things we have lost.

Thriving is important , but it is not as important as surviving .

Fire begins - Difference in Mankind

Recently when I was browsing National Geography’s website, I came across the link that led me to their Genome project . They call it the GENOGRAPHIC PROJECT. The findings of these projects are interesting and exciting. I just thought of sharing a glimpse of it with all of you.

What is this Genome all about?

Genome is all about taking human DNA sample and cracking its sequence to find out the origin of our mankind . It is like unraveling a secret code from our DNA strands.

What is this NAT – GEO’s Genographic project?

The Genographic Project will use sophisticated computer analysis of DNA contributed by hundreds of thousands of people—including and traditional populations and the general public—to reveal man's migratory history and to better understand the connections and differences that make up the human race.

From the above 2 questions, I guess all of us would have got an fair understanding of what I am to discuss about.

I don’t want to get into too many details on the Genographic project , however , I would like throw some light on one particular finding of the genome project

When humans first ventured out of Africa some 60000 years ago , they left genetic footprints still visible today . By mapping the appearance and frequency of genetic markers in modern peoples , we create a picture of when and where ancient humans moved around the world . These great migrations eventually LED TO THE DESCENDANTS OF A SMALL GROUP OF AFRICANS TO OCCUPY THE FARTHEST REACHES OF THE EARTH

When I read this passage , I was awestruck . In a crux, the above paragraph means, that all of us , the entire mankind , has descended from a small tribal group which migrated out of Africa .

Isn’t it unbelievable ? - but it is the truth .

The above statement also implies that I am some how related to George bush , OSAMA BIN LADEN and yes , the person who is reading this blog. I love this conspiracy . It gives a paradigm shift of how an stranger should be looked at .

Imagine this , you walk on a busy street and you find a lot of people walking around . You don’t know any of them , however , you are related to each and every one of them somehow . Which means – They are not actually strangers to you .

Today , the entire humanity is divided by Geographical borders , languages , religions and yes , sometimes by rivers . If we all go back and think about our roots( which incase let me call them as Adam & eve ) , we exist today as a result of their reproduction . So we all ( all the races of mankind) have come from 1 single root . Now it has been proved that all the genetic traces point to the africas , which means , we all have come from the people who migrated from Africa , who left their places in search of food and shelter . Today , it has multiplied and now you see that the entire world is filled by humans .

Today , there is a lot of bloodshed in this world . We kill each other . We want to have nuclear arms . We ignore the poverty conditions of our neighbourhood . Avoid beggars . Don’t care to help , when somebody desperately asks for it . We spend lakhs of money in offering gods , but not even think of feeding a child who asks you little food .We ignore poors , we respect the riches . We trouble animals and nature , thinking that everything was created for us to destroy . However , if we just spend few seconds to think that we all have similar roots and we all are some how related each other , we will not indulge in war , we will not kill each other , we will not ignore the poverty stricken , we will not chase away street children and yes ,the world would have been a better place .

Last but not the least , Man was created to make this world a better place . Only when we differentiate between our humankind , we indulge in killing each other. If we all believe that we all came from one point , we will not see them as different but look at them as your own brothers or sisters.

My intention in this article is not to preach anything out of ordinary. However , to convey a message of goodness to all , who reads this posting . The success of this blog is not in changing a man completely but atleast to make him to think for few minutes about the differences that we make at each other . Even if I make one person think, then that will be my success .

Let me start the fire, if nothing burns, let me set myself in fire.”

more piece of mind ……… to come
